One might approach the issue from the point of view of occupiers to comprehend the importance of language in national identity. Restrictions on the use of Kurdish have been a centerpiece of Turkish state policy since the establishment of Turkey. This policy has included: legal restrictions on the use of Kurdish names; the renaming of historic cities and places; bans on Kurdish language instruction. These policies are an integral part of the broader campaign to forcibly assimilate and coopt all sectors of Kurdish society, language being a major indicator of Kurdish identity. Pass the language to your children and teach them how to read and write in their mother tongue. |
